Intel N95 vs N97 vs N100 vs N150 - which one do you need?
Intel’s N-series processors are very common in affordable Mini PCs, but their names are confusing (as most CPU names are tbh). The numbers do not indicated higher is better! An N97 can be faster than an N100, an N150 is only a small refresh, and an N305 is in a different performance class despite sharing the same letter.
TLDR: As of 2026 - if you’re building a simple media server or basic home lab - you can’t go wrong with any of them - typically the N100 or N150 are cheaper and let you use your budget to get more Memory or Storage.**
All Of Them Make Good Media Server CPUs (so get the cheapest)
The N95, N97, N100, N150, N200, N250, N300, and N305 ALL have modern Intel integrated graphics with Quick Sync Video. This means that Plex and Jellyfin can use that dedicated media hardware to transcode video without asking the CPU cores to do all the work. Lower power usage, higher performance.
For one or two typical 1080p or 4K transcodes, an N95 and N100 will perform basically identically. Don’t bother paying more for a N150 or N200 unless you’re sure you’re going to need it. Network speed, storage connections, cooling, and reliable hardware are usually more important.
None of them make good Gaming Devices (so don’t bother!)
These chips can play lightweight indie games, older PC games, and some modern titles at low settings, but I would not buy an N-series Mini PC primarily for gaming. Their integrated graphics and single-channel memory are the bottleneck, and moving up to an N300 or N305 adds CPU power but not much GPU power.
For an actual gaming Mini PC, your best bet is on an AMD Ryzen model with Radeon integrated graphics. A Ryzen 5 6600H or 6600U is a noticably better than any of these, while a Ryzen 7 6800H, 6800U, 7735HS, or 7840HS is a legit gaming chip. For emulation, N-series systems are good for classic consoles (think 2D) but demanding GameCube, PlayStation 2, Switch, or PlayStation 3 emulation will be much better on a Ryzen system. The Mini PC emulation guide covers those tiers in more detail.
Basic buying guide
- Best default: N100. It is cheap, proven, efficient, and more than capable of running a basic media server.
- Best newer default: N150. Buy it when it costs only a little more than an N100.
- Best basic performer: N97. Choose it over an N100 or N150 at a similar price, especially for light graphics work.
- Best bargain: N95. It is a perfectly useful Quick Sync server chip when the complete Mini PC is cheaper.
- Best for a busy server: N305. Its extra CPU capacity matters when Plex is only one of several jobs.
- Usually skip: N200, N250, and N300. They are good processors, but uncommon pricing often leaves them squeezed between cheaper N100-class systems and faster N305 machines.
My practical buying order is N97 at the same price, N100 or N150 for the best-value system, and N305 for heavier server workloads. The right Mini PC matters more than a small difference between the four-core chips.
Intel N100
The N100 is the easiest recommendation. It is inexpensive, widely available, well understood, and efficient enough for an always-on server. It handles Plex or Jellyfin, Home Assistant, light Docker use, file sharing, web browsing, and basic office work comfortably.
It is not a fast general-purpose desktop processor. Heavy multitasking, software compilation, large game servers, and CPU-based video encoding will expose its limits. But for a small home server or a basic family PC, it does exactly what most buyers need.
Because N100 Mini PCs are so common, you can be picky about the rest of the machine. Prefer a model with 16GB of RAM, an NVMe SSD, 2.5GbE networking, useful USB ports, and a brand with a reasonable warranty over a slightly faster processor in a worse box.
Intel N95: Buy It When It Is Cheaper
The N95 performs very similarly to the N100 in normal CPU tasks. Its graphics configuration and power profile are different, but that rarely changes the experience of running a media server. It still provides the modern Quick Sync media engine that matters for hardware transcoding.
An N95 Mini PC is a good purchase when it is meaningfully cheaper than an otherwise comparable N100 system. If the price, memory, storage, ports, and warranty are the same, take the N100 for its more efficiency-focused design and much wider adoption. If the N95 saves you $25 or $40, take the savings without worrying that you bought a bad Plex machine.
Intel N97: Usually The Fastest Of The Basic Four
The naming is misleading: the N97 is generally faster than the N100. It can run at higher sustained power and has faster graphics, making it the best performer among the commonly sold N95, N97, N100, and N150 class in many Mini PCs.
That makes the N97 appealing for lightweight emulation, a desktop connected to a TV, or a server that also runs several small applications. It is not automatically the most efficient choice under load, though, and Mini PC manufacturers can configure power limits differently. Cooling and firmware can make two N97 systems perform differently.
If an N97 model costs roughly the same as a comparable N100 or N150, buy the N97. If it carries a substantial premium and the machine is only serving media, save your money.
Intel N150: A Small N100 Refresh
The N150 is a newer, slightly faster version of the same basic idea as the N100. It gets modest clock-speed improvements, not a transformation. In daily use it may feel a little quicker, but it does not turn an entry-level Mini PC into a Core i5.
Choose the N150 over the N100 when the price difference is small or when the newer machine has better ports, cooling, or networking. Paying around $10 to $20 more is reasonable. Paying a large premium based on the processor name alone is not.
For a new low-power server, the N150 is an excellent default when competitively priced. Existing N100 owners have no practical reason to upgrade.
What About The N200 And N250?
The N200 and N250 are upgraded four-core variants with stronger integrated graphics, but they are much less common in Mini PCs. Their extra graphics capability can help with light gaming and emulation, while Quick Sync media duties remain broadly similar to the cheaper chips.
They are worth considering when a complete system is priced close to an N100 or N150. They are usually poor value when the seller charges enough to put them near an eight-core N305 or a discounted Ryzen 5 Mini PC.
N300 And N305: Better For A Busy Home Server
The N300 and N305 double the CPU core count of the N95/N97/N100/N150 group. That does not make Quick Sync twice as fast, but it provides much more breathing room for tasks that actually use the CPU.
Choose one when the machine will run Plex alongside several containers, Home Assistant, download automation, a small game server, security-camera software, or other background services. The N305 is the more common performance choice; the N300 targets lower power.
An N305 is often worth an extra $40 to $60 for a genuinely busy server. It is unnecessary for a simple Plex box, and once its price approaches a good Ryzen 5 or Intel Core Mini PC, compare the complete systems rather than assuming the N305 is the better deal.
